Bar of the Year

Following the explosions in the port of Beirut which destroyed, on the night of August 4, 2020, most of the city and the premises of the Bar of Lawyers, the Beirut Bar, the first Bar of Lawyers created in Lebanon even before the country's independence in 1919 faced the test with courage and resilience. Concerned about the search for truth and respect for the rule of law, the Beirut Bar on August 2, 2021, filed a civil complaint before the High Court of Justice in London, against the company suspected of having imported the nitrate ammonium.

While confronting difficulties of an exceptional gravity, the Beirut Bar has continued to lead a tireless fight for the protection of the rights of the defense, the independence of lawyers and bars vis-à-vis the public authorities and judicial authorities. Speaking out against violence and arbitrariness, the Beirut Bar did not hesitate on January 4, 2021, to ask all the lawyers to go on strike in order to protest against the beating, by an agent of the forces order and the detention of a lawyer, Jimmy Hadchiti, in Ghobeiri (in the south of Beirut).

Likewise, a few months later, on May 27, 2021, the Beirut Bar went on strike for four months. to condemn and denounce the arrest, the ban on exercising his profession and entering the confines of the Beirut courthouse, striking in violation of the rules of procedure the lawyer and anti-corruption activist, Rami Alleik, under the pretext of insult and defamation that he allegedly made against the prosecutor, Gahssan Oueidate.

By its determination, the Beirut Bar has set an example to all lawyers in the world of courage and unwavering action for an effective defense insuring the values inherent to the bars.
